Our 2010-2011 Reading Campaign
This year we are kicking off our school wide reading campaign! We are challenging students to read at least one book from a variety of genres. When they have completed reading each book, they will receive a sticker on their genre bookmark from our school’s librarian. Students will then be given the opportunity to reflect and write about what they read in their “Response to Literature” journal. Research shows that elementary school children acquire 8-14 new vocabulary words per day. The majority of these words are picked up when reading. It has also been found that increasing the amount of reading improves a student’s unique writing style and voice. At Coldwater, we are striving towards increasing each student’s intrinsic desire for reading in their free time. We hosted a bookfair the week of September 27th in our school’s auditorium. Students visited the book fair during their classroom library time and after school. Students purchased over $2,000 in books!
